My good friend Rob recently paraphrased Warren Buffett as saying, “If he knew where he was going to live for the next decade, he’d buy a house with a long-term mortgage.” Buffett thought a mortgage was a good hedge against inflation, because the homeowner would pay off the mortgage with cheaper dollars down the road.

After a year or more of depressed prices, gold and silver stocks reversed with a vengeance. GDX (the ETF proxy for the Gold Miners Index) was up in just two months (August and September). Those who followed our lead and bought or averaged down this summer have profited handsomely. It's been a fun ride, and I'm convinced we'll see many more surges like this before it's all over.

I recently wrote an article about the challenge to "Discover the Next Starbucks". When Starbucks had its IPO many years ago it was as good as gold was to investors who bought it around $285 back in 2001.
Now the price of gold seems to be like shares of Starbucks...caught in a rather narrow range. But it may be safe to say that...
