As long-time students of precious metals investing, there are certain things we understand. One is that, historically, the availability ratio of silver to gold has had a direct influence on the price of the metals. The current availability ratio of physical silver to gold for investment purposes is approximately 3:1.

My good friend Rob recently paraphrased Warren Buffett as saying, “If he knew where he was going to live for the next decade, he’d buy a house with a long-term mortgage.” Buffett thought a mortgage was a good hedge against inflation, because the homeowner would pay off the mortgage with cheaper dollars down the road.

While the price of gold has languished in a trading range much of the year, leaving some investors scratching their heads, many have been buying - and in some cases, really loading up.

Traditional cancer treatment options are little more than a crude mix of "slash, burn, and poison" – that is surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. There are radical new treatments in labs and trials all over the world that promise to throw out this trifecta; no other disease has received more of the research interest and funding that have defined modern biotechnology over the past three decades.

Don't we all need a "safety net" underneath our investment portfolios? Only gamblers and inexperienced traders would answer "no". As an investor, there’s one simple step you can take to protect your investments that stands out above the rest.

A number of market analysts and gold-industry insiders are warning about a possible shortage of gold supply. Barrick CEO Jamie Sokalsky recently stated that since gold production is inelastic (i.e., insensitive to price changes) there will be a very limited increase in supply from gold producers, even during sharp increases in the gold price.

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision is an exclusive and somewhat mysterious entity that issues banking guidelines for the world’s largest financial institutions. It is part of the Bank of International Settlements (BIS) and is often referred to as the Central Banks’ central bank. Ever since the financial meltdown four years ago, the Basel Committee has been hard at work devising new international regulatory rules designed to minimize the potential for another large-scale financial meltdown.

After a year or more of depressed prices, gold and silver stocks reversed with a vengeance. GDX (the ETF proxy for the Gold Miners Index) was up in just two months (August and September). Those who followed our lead and bought or averaged down this summer have profited handsomely. It's been a fun ride, and I'm convinced we'll see many more surges like this before it's all over.

"For the ultimate gold lover on your shopping list, one amazing purchase you can nab is a Christmas tree complete with Disney characters and gold leaf ribbons made of 88 pounds of pure gold from a jewelry store in Tokyo, according to Reuters. The ornamental tree will set you back $4.2 million, but there’s also a smaller version available for $243,000."

November hasn't been living up to its reputation as one of the best months for U.S. stocks. Equity investors have been fed a cornucopia of negative news that has been difficult to digest, including the outcome of the “fiscal cliff,” the front page photos of rioting in the euro zone, and the escalation of geopolitical risk in the Middle East.
As important as it is to stay informed on global events, don’t let short-term events affect your long-term investments. It may be more profitable to let seasonal trends guide your decision making. Take a look at the bar chart below, which shows three-month rolling returns for the S&P 500 Index during the past eight decades.

Market at Risk of One More Leg Down

Editor's Note: We don't make short-term predictions on the market. That said, the following article based on technical analysis makes the case for one more leg down in the major stock market averages between now and the so-called "Santa Claus Rally". There are plenty of news drivers and unresolved issues to accommodate volatility and lower stock prices. Our opinion, generally speaking, is to buy the dips and anticipate the Fed's monetary easing--which could end up being an endless version of "QE3". Also look for some last-minute compromises and deals concerning the "fiscal cliff". Recent days have seen a blizzard of Microsoft-related activity, as a host of new products has blanketed the marketplace.
First and foremost: the release of Windows 8, the most radical change in MS's flagship operating system in 17 years. The Redmond behemoth wants you to switch over, and fast. If you don't want to swap your old computer for one with the new OS pre-installed, the company has put an attractive $39.99 price out there for an in-place, downloadable upgrade (or $69.99 if you want a disc mailed).
